7 simple tricks that will make you love your home.

There is little worse than walking into your home and feeling stressed out and over whelmed. You want to love your home but, all you see is a chaotic mess.

Let me tell you I’ve been there. For 20 + years, we’ve lived in a pretty tiny home of less than 900 square feet. When the kids were little it was hard not to feel like there were toys and clutter everywhere, even though I did my best to keep it at a minimum. Any time family came to stay, there was always the comment about how tiny out house was, only adding to the discontentment.

We often thought about adding on, but it made no sense financially. At the same time, I knew that the environment in our home generally effects everything else. You see, if you don’t love your home it’s going to reflect itself in the rest of your life.

It was easy to see that when ever I allowed my house to get out of control I was much more likely to snap at my family and be easily irritated. Plus, I found it so hard to just sit down and relax. Its hard not to allow discontentment to show itself in your general attitude.

So if you’re like me, and want to love your home again, then its time to get intentional.

Start by being clear on what you want from your home. It doesn’t have to be perfect, but it should be a reflection of you and a place that inspires you.

In addition, it’s important for your home to be a refuge where everyone feels safe and cozy. I also want my family to feel relieved to be home when they walk in the door. Ultimately home is the place I want everyone to feel at peace.

To achieve these tings, there is no need to wait for your “dream home” There are things you can do right now to be intentional and love your home.

The best part, loving your home isn’t about making big changes: Its about learning to appreciate the little things.

By making a few simple changes I was able to change the entire atmosphere of my home and most importantly my attitude and mood.

So are you ready to rekindle your love affair with your home? There are 7 simple tricks that will make you love your home again.

1 Have a clear and organized space.

It is so true that a cluttered space creates a cluttered mind. In turn, a cluttered mind leads to overwhelm and stress. If your feeling over whelmed and stressed there is no way your going to feel at peace and love your home.

Studies have shown that a clear organized room is actually good for your. Instead of feeling discontentment, it creates a feeling of satisfaction. When you keep things clear and organized, the feeling of your home becomes restorative and restful. On the other hand, a space filled with clutter and unfinished products actually creates depression and fatigue.

To truly love your home take the time to clear your space. Here are a few simple ways to keep your home clean and orgainized.

A: Make your bed every day.

There are so many benefits to making your bed everyday. But, with out a doubt, the greatest benefit is no matter what, at least one room will feel clean.

B: Limit your laundry.

I can’t tell you how many times I would have my kiddos come to me, “hey mom! I have no socks or undies” UHG, I would get theirs done, and mine would pile up.

Honestly, laundry was always one of the hardest areas for me before I started paring down my wardrobe. To be completely truthful, I love clothes and I’ll probably never have a minimalist wardrobe. But as I have worked on downsizing and building a capsule wardrobe my laundry load has definitely lightened.

I have a bunch of tips included in this post to help you keep up with your laundry. https://uncommomspaces.com/keeping-up-with-the-laundry-its-easier-then-you-think/

It is very rare that my laundry piles up. Because it takes me so much less time to fold and put my clothes away its become a no biggy to do laundry.

While my family generally still has the same amount of clothing, lessening mine has been incredible.

C: De Clutter

Plain and simple, clutter equals stress. Lets be real, nobody walks into a cluttered space and feels a sudden sense of relaxation and peace.

If you really want to love your home, you MUST clear the clutter. I realize that if you have alot of clutter this is not an easy task. But I have a ton of help for you on this. You can find links below to my many decluttering post.

D: Keep your space clear.

As I mentioned above, for the past 20 something years I have lived with my boyfriend and all of our kids and pets in a small 1300 square foot home. Trust me, at various points we have used every square inch of our little space.

But here’s the thing, creating clear areas of floor space made a dramatic difference of cleanliness and order in my home. This simple adjustment made the entire house feel less cluttered and less over whelming.

You really don’t have to have hours of free time to maintain a clear and organized space.

2 Use home decor colors that make you happy.

We’ve already talked about the impact our environment has on our mood. This include the colors in our home.

According to an article in country living “the five paint colors that will make you happy” the shade of paint on your walls can bring you down, help you relax, even suppress your appetite. Amongst a number of other feelings.

For me personally, warmer neutral tons are what helps relax me and love being home. I’m just naturally drawn to warm tones. When ever I’m pursuing pintrest or scanning a decor magazine, I’m always drawn to the photos of those gorgeous rooms with pops of color from natural plants to throw rugs.

So when your looking to love your home again, focus on how you feel around certain colors and how you can incorporate them into your home. Go to pinterest or pick up a decor magazine and pay attention to what colors catch your eye, then start adding them to your home.

You don’t need to redo everything or break the budget. You can pick up some throw pillows or cozy couch throw from Amazon pretty cheap.

The point is to incorporate those colors that make you feel happy and at peace. As you do, you will love your home again.

3 Bring a little nature indoors.

Haven’t you noticed how simple little tings like fresh cut flowers or new plants can brighten your day?

Not only has it been shown that these can benefit your physical health, but simply seeing a plant subconsiously makes you feel calm and relaxed.

Flowers and plants have an immediate impact on happiness! Adding a few plants or fresh flowers is such a simple and fun way to love your home.

4 Display framed inspirational words and quotes.

We know our environment impacts our moods because we’re taking in what we see. So it only makes sense to fill our home with things that evoke a positive emotion.

Words are so powerful, in fact, they are the most powerful thing in the universe. With words, the entire universe was created.

The words we speak not just to others but to ourselves are hugely impactful. Because words matter, displaying your favorite inspirational quote creates an atmosphere that inspires you to be your best.

5 Let the light shine in.

During the day time hours make sure you regularly open curtains and windows and doors. Natural light is a natural mood lifer and so is fresh air.

Make your home a place you love. Let the light shine in.

6 Remove things that don’t make you happy.

If theres one thing in your life you should NOT make room for is its negativity. So why would you want to keep things in your home or life, that doesn’t make you happy.

To love your home, keep only those things that you love or are truly useful. Remove everything else.

I’m not talking about general de cluttering here or Marie Kono sparking joy. I’m talking about things like that incredibly ugly but expensive vase great Aunt Jenny gave you. You know that every time you see it, you want to get rid of it, but you feel too guilty. Honestly, it’s time you give it up. Your home should be a place of comfort and joy, not guilt!

https://uncommomspaces.com/how-i-conquer-clutter-when-its-emotionally-difficult/ This is a great post if you struggle with emotional clutter.

7 Create a beautiful ambience.

We’ve already talked alot about the impact our physical environment has on our mental state and our emotions. In light of this, it’s evident that creating a beautiful ambience can help you love your home.

You can do this so easily by adding some soft lighting. I love my salt lamp and diffuser for creating a soft glow. Add a few candles and you’ll instantly create a beautiful ambience in your home. Candles have the added benefit of infusing a fresh clean scent.

The right lighting naturally adds a feeling of comfort and a cozy warmth.

You deserve to love your home! Take some time to de clutter, clean and organize. Add a few decor items with color that makes you happy. Mix in a few plants or fresh flowers and hang those inspiring words. Once you’re done, pour yourself some tea and set back and enjoy the home you love!

The best home decor to shop for at thrift stores.

I absolutely love to thrift home decor! So often people purge their homes and donate things that are in great condition and thrift stores sell them at a fraction of the cost. This, my friends, makes thrift store decorating one of the cheapest ways to get a stylish home.

I know for alot of people walking into a thrift store can be overwhelming… There’s stuff everywhere, the shelves are packed, and if you don’t have a game plan, it can seem like too much.

That’s why I’m sharing with you what aisles I focus on and what items I always search for. That way, next time you’re doing your thrift store home decor shopping, you’ll know where to go and just what to look for at stores.

Why shop for home decor at thrift stores?

-Buying second hand saves money.

-Used decor can easily be made to match your style.

-Thrift stores often have vintage or unique items.

Yes, it’s true, I’m one of those thrift store decorating blogs. I’ll always be sharing with you fun ways to decorate your home with designer style on a thrifters budget and thrifting home decor is a great way to do that.

8 Best thrift store home decor items.

Baskets

The basket selection at thrift stores is huge. Be picky about the ones you get. Only get ones that have a purpose in your home- whether that’s simply as decor or as an organizational tool.

My preference is to find ones that have a larger weave and are made of sea grass, but there are definitely some wood ones that catch my eye too.

Also, as a general rule, shy away from things with color or patterns. Natural colors are more versatile.

Get it

  • Flat, tray like baskets that can be used as a tray, propped up on a shelf, or hung in a wall gallery.
  • Round, two handled baskets that can be placed on the floor or shelf to corral groups of things like shoes, towels, or books.

Leave it

  • Baskets with a single large handle (unless you’re making Easter baskets!)
  • Colored baskets.
School Ready Checks and Accessories

Lamps

There are always tons of lamps available, but be sure the ones you get are in good condition. Damages to watch for are scratches on the base, missing parts around the bulb insert, and dents and tears in the shade.

Get it

  • Stylish full lamps.
  • Fun bases.
  • Individual lamp shades in the size you need.

Leave it

  • Lamps that are broken or missing pieces.
  • Lamps that are the wrong style or size for your space.

Dishware

I always persue the dishes aisle, but the place I typically find what I want is on the end caps. The thrift store staff sets up the end caps to display their “nicest” stock, so be sure to scour each of them.

Even if they’re grouped by color, you maybe surprised to find a great piece of white decor on the purple themed end cap.

Get it

  • Small plates that can be used as trays or propped on shelves as decor.
  • Groups of small colored dishes that can be displayed on an open shelf or in a hutch.
  • Unique dish items that match your current dishes style.

Leave it

  • Generic dish sets – mugs

Greenery/florals

Be sure the greenery you purchase looks realistic. You don’t want to fill your home with greenery that’s obviously fake, rather invest in quality faux items.

Also, thrift stores tend to place larger greenery items (like faux trees) with the large furniture, so don’t forget to there too.

Get it

  • Realistic looking floral stems.
  • Stylish faux potted plants.
  • Twig or stick arrangements.

Leave it.

  • unrealistic looking stems.
  • Gaudy floral arrangements.

Linnens

A lot of times stores will donate their stock that doesn’t sell to local thrift stores.

Our goodwill actually gets old stock from target, so there are frequently new and unopened curtains, throw blankets, sheet sets, and pillows for sale at thrift store prices.

As with all things, check for damage, and don’t forget to make sure the curtains are the right length for your windows or the sheets are the right size for your bed!

Get it

  • Unopened sheet sets.
  • Unopened throw blankets.
  • New throw pillows with original store tags.
  • Unopened table cloths or cloth napkins.

Leave it

  • Used or damaged linnens.
  • Anything with an unpleasant odor.

Frames/art

The frame aisle generally contains a lot more than just basic picture frames.

You can find excellent art (both framed and even on canvas) and mirrors (that can easily be spruced up with a coat of paint) mixed in with the frames.

Get it

  • Picture frames.
  • Mirrors
  • Wall art

Leave it

  • Cheap or damaged frames.
  • Frames or art that doesn’t match the style of your space.

Wood decor

While there are lots of aisles filled with all sorts of decor at thrift stores, I definitely take my time searching the section of wood decor. I typically get 1-2 items from this aisle every time I shop at a thrift store. There’s always great stuff!

You’ll also find that other types of decor might be placed here. So still be on the look out for greenery, baskets and other items while your looking through the wood decor too.

Get it

  • Decor signs
  • wood bowls or trays.

Leave it

  • Decor that doesn’t match the style of your space.
  • Items that you don’t have a place for in your home.

Craft supplies

The crafting aisle definitely one that can seem overwhelming. There is a ton of stuff packed onto those shelves. Don’t be intimidated by that, but rather go this aisle with a purpose. Knowing what kind of crafting supplies you use and are planning projects for and focus in on these things.

Get it

  • yarn supplies
  • stamp supplies
  • paper crafting supplies
  • thank you cards
  • embroidery wreaths

Leave it

Ok friends, lets review.

Must have thrift shop home decor items.

  1. Baskets
  2. lamps
  3. dish ware
  4. greenery/floral
  5. linnens
  6. frames/artwork
  7. wood decor
  8. craft supplies.

I really hope this post helps you feel more confident in what to look for so you can do some great decorating with thrift store finds.

I mean seriously, after all of that information, how can you tell me you don’t feel like you could walk into a thrift store with purpose now?

Here’s how to set a beautiful Thanksgiving table on a budget.

Its one thing to do the Thanksgiving menu on a budget, its another thing to set a beautiful table. Can you host 10 people for dinner and set a gorgeous seasonal table while on a budget? Certainly! And you don’t even have to be particularly crafty.

Dishes and glassware: find beauty in the mismatched.

You don’t need a full cupboard of dishes to host 10 for dinner. There are other ways to set the table beautifully.

First strategy? Borrow. Ask guests and friends if you can borrow dishes. Keep everything in one palette. (white is always classic) for a blended, yet beautiful look.

Second strategy? Thrift store. Hit up your local thrift store. You can get a haul of plates for just a few dollars, and they will go together beautifully.

The same applies to silverware and glassware.Dollar Tree is the place to look for an even more inexpensive idea.

Greenery: Go outside (and go glam)

You can find inexpensive greenery at the Dollar Tree (We’ll come back to that), but for an even less expensive option, go outside and stroll through your neighborhood, gathering leaves and branches with fall foliage for your table. Candles are a great option and can be quite inexpensive. But you may want to visit Jewelry Candle Co – JEWELSCENT | Hidden jewel valued $15-$7500 in our jewelry scents for a way to decorate and bring out the scent of fall!

Skip the table cloth.

Table clothes are expensive. Skip them altogether and do a runner of brown paper. You can purchase this at Dollar Tree. Or lay a bright, pretty scarf down the center of the table for some color.

To capture all the memories from Thanksgiving… Don’t forget to visit Mixbook’s Homepage Where there are endless options to capture these memories for years to come.

How to host a freakishly frugal Halloween party.

I’ve thrown a lot of parties in my day. But have only been able to host a few Halloween parties. And so far, the last one was really epic. So if you are thinking about doing an epic party, here is my step by step plan.

This site contains affiliate links. I can make money if you make a purchase after clicking on one of my links.

Step 1 THEME

First you have to decide what type of Halloween party you want to have. Do you want to go gory-slasher flick style? Or do you want to do a vampire theme? Mad scientist? I decided to do a more generic haunted house theme. I love to create a creep spooky atmosphere.

Step 2 DECORATIONS

You could throw up a few fake spider webs, but to throw an epic party, you have to commit to the decor. Once you’ve decided your theme, you can figure out which direction to take your decor. I put those fake spider webs all over the place. You really have to stretch them to get them to look realistic. And then I threw up some fake spiders. I covered my furniture in sheets so the house looked abandoned. I decorated with lots of creepy decorations like skulls, ravens, and some old country pictures which look eerie with all the other decor.

I made the entry way extra creepy, since its the first impression of the house. The front porch has lots of pumpkins and hay bales along with some creepy signs I picked up at the Dollar Tree! Once you enter the house you’ll see tons of spider web and tattered fabric draped around.

There were other little touches here and there. You can use old antique looking pictures and frames. I searched images until I found one I liked and printed it out. Or if you have some of your own tucked away…

Step 3 LIGHTING

Lighting is literally one of the most important parts of the spooky factor. We turned off all the over head lights. You can get strings of colored lights at the Dollar Tree. Candles, tea lights and lanterns all add to the feel.

Step 4 SPECIAL EFFECTS

You could do some sort of dry ice or fog. Or you could project some images to make it look like there are ghosts in the house.

Step 5 TABLE SCAPE

And this is actually my favorite part. I set up my table with bowls and plates of treats. So everyone can help themselves. Just put out a cheap black table cloth then add some creepy touches like candles, pictures, skulls, what ever you have.

Step 6 FOOD

Food is a simple way to add decor and its fun. You can always find Halloween colored candy and even gummy worms will work. Green colored frosting, red colored drinks and the list goes on. Its so fun!

Step 7 DRINKS

You can serve your drinks in champagne glasses. This adds to the creepy factor. Place a bucket with dry ice to make the foggy effect. Or set out bottles of soda with creepy labels in place of the original labels.

Step 8 GAMES

With an epic party you just cant hope everyone will be satisfied with decorations and special effects. Plan some activities! You can make a bean bag toss out of a card board box. Use strings of lights to light it up. Use which hats for a ring toss game. A fun team game to play is the “mummy wrap” Using crepe paper, the first person to use up all the paper wins.

So you see, with these 8 tips, and epic party is very easy. And you can do it all on a budget! Just look around your home for what you cant find at the Dollar tree or local thrift store.

Why decorating makes you feel good.

This post contains affiliate links. I may receive a small commission if you make a purchase after clicking on any of my links.

Decorating makes you feel good for a numerous amount of reasons. Not only do you display your taste, you can feel good about showing off your space.

I feel your pain if your having trouble making your home feel like a home. We have been living with hand me down furniture, old paint on the walls, and boxes of old items packed away for far too long. Its time we took some action.

So, we set a date to get some major things accomplished.

Decorating

Now, decorating I thought would come easily to me since I just love scrolling through pintrest for ideas. Its simple to make boards and save what you love. Implementing is a whole other story, especially if your on a budget.

It took a while but we finally got our living room put together the way we like it.

Sense of accomplishment

Do you love the feeling of accomplishment? I can’t relay enough how great I felt after everything was done. We couldn’t help but marvel at our updated space. The burden of looking at old furniture and paint was behind us. I still look at everything and smile knowing that our home is almost completely set up the way we planned.

Sense of style

In my day job, I get to work from home. Making soaps, refinishing furniture, and writing for this blog. This is an amazing opportunity, and lets me be able to take care of my family. I am also a sales rep for JEWLSCENTS, and get to go to other peoples homes for parties. I get to see other peoples sense of style. Lets just say… some people do not get the opportunity to update or decorate for years. It makes me feel good to show off my sense of style and enjoy it everyday.

Dollar Tree has everything you need to help update your decor!

Peace and serenity

Ever finish a project and have a sense of calm after its complete? We could get into the science of endorphins, but I think keeping this post a little more simple would be more relateable.

That’s exactly how I felt when I was done decorating. I felt calm and comfortable in my newly updated space. I look at our accomplishment and usually let out a sigh of relief knowing it is all done. We can enjoy our hard work.

Its all in the details

There are a couple details that I love to show off. The ones I love the most are wall art.

I recently purchased a print from MIXBOOK.com Its a family picture from last thanksgiving.

I love the simplicity of the design!

So there you have it! All the reasons decorating can make you feel good.
